BIOGRAPHY:
1870 Census, 12th Ward, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, page 12, 15 July 1870, list Robert McLain, age 28, an Expresswagon driver, and Grace, age 23, keeping house.  They had one child:  James, age 1, born in Pennsylvania.  Place of birth for Robert & Grace listed as Ireland. James McRoberts (27, wagon driver)and Robert Shaw (22, wagon driver)resided at the same address.  Elizabeth McLean lived in same ward w/ Hugh, Samuel, & Ellen & appear on the same census page.

1880 Census of West Deer, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, Pg 8 of 29, lists Robert, age 39,a farmer, and Grace, age 30. They had 5 children:  J.M., age 11; H.A., age 9; Robert, age 7; W.F., age 4; and John, age 2. Place of birth for both Robert & Grace listed as Ireland, as were both their parents.

1900 Census, 13th Ward, Pittsburgh, PA, image 33 of 35, 14 June 1900, 2399 Rednor Street (nearly illegible, not positive on street name.  Grace McClane (note spelling), head of household, DOB 1849, with 3 chldren, Robert (27, Laborer) , John (21, Driver), & Grace (17).  Date of Grace's immigration to U.S. 1866.  Owner of home.  Son Hugh lived next door at 2397, with wife Bessie & daughter Emma F.

1910 Census, 13th Ward, Pittsburgh, PA, image 23, reflects Grace, age 59, residing with sons Robert and John at 7103 Rednor Street. Notes indicate "own income" and an immigration date of 1868.  Both parents from Ireland. Of note, the census reflects that Grace had 8 children, 6 surviving.  That would indicate one child missing from my list.

1920(Image 15, Pennsylvania, Allegheny County, Pittsburgh) census reflects Grace is a widow residing at 7307 Monticello Street, Pittsburgh, PA w/ sons Robert and John.  Age is noted as 70, which would indcate a DOB of 1850, rather than the 1833 previously indicated.  Immigration date:  1865.  Naturalized citizen, date unclear but appears to be 1879.  Able to read and write.  Both parents Irish.

I was told by my mother, Doris Hughes Werner, that Grace came over from Ireland as a companion to a wealthy woman's children.  Query whether this could have been part of the same McConnell family that the McClain brothers accompanied to the U.S.  jwk

Will of Grace McClain names sons John and Robert as executors.  Personal estate valued at $4100.  She owned a grocery business at 7146 Hermitage Street, Pittsburgh, which was run by John and left to him in the will.  She also owned at the time of her will a property known as 7105 Kedron Avenue, Pittsburgh, Lot # 937 in Homewood Driving Park Plan.  It does not appear that she owned any real estate at the time of her death.  Each of the surviving children got 1/6 of the funds in the estate of $447.78.

They had the following children:

  F i Grace MCCLAIN was born 13 Nov 1882 and died 6 Jan 1972.
M ii James M. MCCLAIN was born 1 Feb 1869 and died 4 Aug 1950.
M iii Hugh Andrew MCCLAIN was born 20 Mar 1871 and died 22 Apr 1956.

Robert MCCLAIN [scrapbook] was born 3 Feb 1873 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He died 15 Feb 1965 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was buried in Mt. Royal Cemetary, Glenshaw, Pennsylvania.

BIOGRAPHY: In my memory, "Uncle" Bob was a wizen old gentlemen who lived with his brother John on a property behind my grandparents (Earl & Grace Hughes) home at 114 Woodland Road, Glenshaw, PA.  Grace was their sister.  They seemed to me to be virtual hermits, as they did not attend the family functions which were regularly held at my grandparents, nor were either able to drive.  I heard stories of a dispute with my grandfather which caused a problem between them and my branch of the family, but was never told details.  I recall a somewhat morbid fascination with them and the rundown property where they lived. No doubt all of the kids were scared of them and were afraid to venture on the property.  My mother use to tell stories of the days when her Uncle Bob owned a candy store. After the death of the brothers, the property was sold and a church presently occupies the site.    -Janice Werner Kemp-Phillippy

1910 Census, 13th Ward, Pittsburgh, PA, image 23, reflects Grace, age 59, residing with sons Robert, age 29, and John at 7103 Rednor Street. Robert is listed as a manufacturer of candies.  This would again indicate a birthdate for Robert of 1880.

1920 Census Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA, Image 15, lists Robert residing with Grace McClain at 7307 Monticello Street, Pittsburgh.  His age is listd as 40, occupation propriator of a confectionary store. Accepting this age as correct, his date of birth would appear to be 1880 instead of 1873. However, in the Bible, which I believe my mother inherited when the brother's died in 1965, lists the dates of birth of all the children.  The entry appears old and lists Robert dob as 3 Feb 1873. Both parents, (Robert and Grace) are listed as from Ireland. -Janice Werner Kemp-Phillippy

1930 Census, Pittsburgh, District 203, page 28, list William and Mae living at 7151 Upland Street. Mae's parents are listed as from Germany, William's from Ireland. William is employed as a watchman at an academy.
M v William Francis MCCLAIN was born 10 Sep 1875 and died 22 Nov 1941.

John MCCLAIN [scrapbook] was born 24 Mar 1881 (prev 1878) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He died 23 Jan 1965 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was buried in Mt. Royal Cemetary, Glenshaw, Pennsylvania.

1910 Census, 13th Ward, Pittsburgh, PA, image 23, reflects Grace, age 59, residing at 7103 Rednor Street with sons Robert and John, age 27, a retail merchant of a grocery store.

1920 Census, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA (Image 15)lists John, age 38, residing with Robert and his mother, Grace at 7307 Monticello Street.  Occupation is listed as laborer, engine company. Again, as with Grace and John, the birthdates do not agree exactly with dates previously supplied.  He is listed as 38, which would place his year of birth as 1882 and not 1878, however, if so, that places him in conflict with the birth of my grandmother Grace McClain Hughes.  Her date of birth would seem a relative certainty. In addition, in the Bible, which I believe my mother inherited when the brother's died in 1965, lists the dates of birth of all the children.  The entry appears old and lists John's year of birth as 1878. -Janice Werner Kemp-Phillippy

1930 Census, Pittsburgh, District 203, page 28, list William and Mae living at 7151 Upland Street. Mae's parents are listed as from Germany, William's from Ireland. William is employed as a watchman at an academy.

Albert Ellison MCCLAIN was born 8 Jun 1880 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He died 8 Feb 1891 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Note date of birth was taken from Bible believed to originally belong to John and/or Robert.  Entries were made as to the birth date of each child.  Genealogy work of John Werner placed Albert's dob as 10 April 1880.  Unsure of the source of that date.  JW Kemp-Phillippy.

I am a direct descendent of Harriet Lee Seavey; her daugher Alwild Lurretta Seavey Hughes., b.1845 d. Jan 13, 1928 was my ggrandmother. I dont't have her mother's name: Margaret Boylon was a possibility but her dates don't fit. Her family tree included WM. Lee m. Jane Kidd whose son was Joseph Lee. The children of Joseph and Harriet appear to be Alwilda, Lucinda A. m. John G. Williams, Charlie?, Josiah. Ida B. (Kinch), Will?. and Josephine L. (Josie), b.1856 d. Jan 14, 1882. On Mar. 14, 1866, Alwilda m. Alonza M. Hughes, b.Apr. 17, 1845 d. Mar. 13, 1914. They had 10 surviving children; the youngest, LaVerne (Vern) Hughes of Ambridge was my grandfather. I have Alwilda's diary which mentions many Etna families. I'd love to read/learn about Joseph's will and to trade info.

thank you Sue; Idon't know how your info might tie in but I'll keep trying for a link somehow. My harriet was a sister of my great grand mother and she married a man named Jason Langdon Seavey who was born in Maine but had moved to Etna Pa. in the mid 1850's.I have no other clues and if any of this sounds familiar I'd love your input and suggestions; if I can help, let me know..good luck Jackie

DEATH: The death of
Mr. J. L. Seavey occured yesterday morning at 11 o'clockat the home of his
son-in-law Mr. W. T. Richards on Lincoln avenue. His death was not
unexpected as he had been fast failing for the past three days. It is
mourned wspecially by his sons W. L. and J. L. SEavey Jr. and daughter Mrs
Richards, who were present at the time and other members of the family. Mr.
Seavey brought his family to this city in 1891 and has lived here ever
since. He worked at the Colorado Midland shops as carpenter for five years
and then his health broke down and he has been very poorly during the
remaining three years. He was very well known to all in this city and his
death is deeply felt by all. The funeral will take place tomorrow at the
Methodist church. Rev. L.C. Powell will conduct the service.
(Obit rec'd Jacqueline San Pedro from Colorado Springs)

BURIAL: Jason died on the 21st of
january 1899 and I went through the pages of the Colorado Springs Gazette
which was and still is the daily paper here. His burial plot was purchased
by his son J. H. Seavey on the 20th of Jan. as a single lot(Fairview Cemetery, Colorado Springs), and he was
buried under the name of Mr. Seavy, (not Seavey), and there was never a
headstone as far as any one knows nor any indication that one could have
fallen or broken. When I found a Mrs H.L.Seavey buried in Pueblo I thought
this was an error and the clerk explained tha the initials stood for Harriet
Lee, and she is buried with Josiah, and William L. and other Seaveys.

Harriet Josephine LEE [Parents] [scrapbook] was born 11 Apr 1826 in Etna, Pennsylvania. She died 12 May 1901 in Pueblo, CO and was buried 14 May 1901 in Mountain View Cemetary, Pueblo, Colorado. Harriet married Jason Langdon SEAVEY.

Note:  In light of mounting evidence the Liephart name occurred in generation prior to Harriet Josephine and that he father was Joseph Lee - including the will of Joseph Lee, I have made the correction of the name and added the Liephart information in what I believe to be the appropriate place.
